Domestic Violence as a Factor in Divorce Cases

Last updated on April 8, 2021

It is not at all surprising that domestic violence is a factor in many divorce cases. After all, intimate partner violence and other forms of domestic abuse are very common in American society.

Indeed, domestic assault cases are so frequent that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, whose headquarters are right here in Atlanta, have identified them as a public health issue.

Understandably, then, the divorce process in Atlanta and elsewhere in Georgia often involves allegations of violence between couples. One recent high-profile case concerned the former NFL football player Chad Johnson and reality TV star Evelyn Lozada.

Last week, Johnson was sentenced to a year on probation after entering a no contest plea to charges that he head-butted Lozada during an argument. After the incident, she received medical treatment for lacerations to her head. The couple was later divorced.

Lozada appears to have turned the page on that chapter of her life. She was in Atlanta recently for a sexy photo shoot with a celebrity photographer to promote her career in reality TV and other projects.

For his part, Chad Johnson does not have such immediately encouraging job prospects. From 2001 to 2010, he was a top-flight wide receiver for the Cincinnati Bengals and was selected for several Pro Bowls. After playing last season for the New England Patriots, he was released by the Miami Dolphins in training camp this year.

The judge who accepted Johnson’s plea agreement in the domestic violence case also ordered him to pay restitution to Lozada. The amount was not specified in media accounts.
