Ex-Braves player’s wife files for divorce, wants prenup thrown out

With so many local professional sports teams, it is not a rarity on any given day for a media story concerning a high-profile athlete to suddenly garner widespread attention. Fair or not, the limelight brings attention, and it is not always positive.

Such is the case with Andruw Jones, a former and long-time presence with the Atlanta Braves, who routinely received accolades and high praise for his baseball acumen as a mainstay member of the Braves roster from 1996 – 2007.

Now Jones is the principal in another kind of story centered on his wife’s recent divorce filing in Fulton County following a domestic violence incident in the couple’s home on Christmas morning that eventually resulted in a battery charge against Jones.

Nicole Jones filed for divorce earlier this month, calling the couple’s decade-long marriage “irretrievably broken.”

Child custody is a central issue in the dissolution, with the couple having a 9-year-old son, and Nicole Jones is seeking joint legal and primary custody over the boy. She is also seeking monthly child support payments and spousal support (alimony). The couple executed a prenuptial agreement prior to their marriage, which Nicole Jones has asked a judge to declare null and void.

Unsurprisingly, Jones has made a lot of money over his professional career, and property division will undoubtedly be a major source of discussion and negotiation between the couple in their dissolution. Nicole Jones is reportedly asking for half of the couple’s property.

Jones is currently out of Major League Baseball, although he continues to play the game at a high level and commanding salary. He signed a contract recently to play in Japan for a single season for $3.5 million.
